Millennial On A Mission: Anthony Bowden

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a MOAM spotlight, but given recent events that have transpired over the last week, I felt it was best to take a step back for some much needed reflection. It’s still going to take a bit of time for all of us to heal, but I’m hopeful that we will use our collective voice in order to incite the necessary change to make our world a better place.

This week’s Millennial On A Mission is not only an educator, but the best-selling author of the book, Jake Goes To College, which encourages young people to attend and complete college.

I’d like for you to meet Anthony Bowden.

A native of College Park, Georgia, Anthony is a proud graduate of Savannah State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in behavioral analysis and his first master’s degree in educational management. He recently earned his second master’s degree in social work from New York University. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the passion to give and help others,” Anthony says. “It is now my dream to change the lives of young students.”

MOAM: What inspired you to pursue a career in education? Who are some individuals you admire in and out of your field? What challenges have you faced in building your business/brand, and what have you learned from them?

AB: I’ve always known that I wanted to affect and change students lives. I noticed that when I was young, the lack young black leaders in my community and I decided then at that moment that I wanted to be that guy for the youth. I’ve always looked up to people like Dr. Steve Perry and Geoffrey Canada and the work they have done in the education field.

There are always challenges, the biggest one for me is just learning and navigating the world of children’s book. It’s difficult being a young black male working in education, so maneuvering by myself has been a challenge. It’s been great learning from my mistakes, for makes it easier to handle when that road block appears in my path again.

To Anthony, being a Millennial On A Mission explains this journey that has pushed him to enlighten the minds of young children. “I am on a mission to change to the world along with so many others,” Anthony says. “I tell myself daily to be patient, things are not going to happen overnight and just be prepared when they do happen.” His advice to his millennials peers? Always be ready; eager to learn and listen. “You have to take risks in life — so why not take a risk on yourself and not someone else?”
